Most locally produced soybean in Ghana is exported, with USD 29 Million worth of exports in 2022-23. Meanwhile, domestic demand for soymeal and oil are mostly met by imports - 83,000 MT of soymeal worth USD 56 Million were imported in the same year.

This is where we come in.

Project Objectives
Increase domestic availability of high quality soy products
Decrease Ghanaian farmer reliance on fickle export prices
Improve post harvest handling of soybeans through tools & education
MAIN
PROCESSING FACILITY
PHYSICAL EXTRUSION OIL MILL
Cropron's main processing facility is located near Tamale, in the Yong-Savelugu Municipal Area of Ghana's Northern Region.
This placement is strategic, owing to the fact that the region accounts for 90% of soybean cultivated across the country annually.

This facility is responsible for cleaning raw soybeans and processing them into full-fat soybean meal, low-fat soybean meal, and soybean oil. The soybean meal is packed and packaged on-site, while the soybean oil is sent to refineries for further processing.

Our facility can process up to 75 Tonnes of soybean per day, with expansion plans bringing it to above 120 Tonnes per day.
The Process
Cropron's processing facility incorporates the use of physical extrusion to process soybean. Physical extrusion involves heating of cleaned, cracked soybean seed at a specified high temperature range under pressure. The extruded soybean is then sent to an expeller (oil press) for oil extraction.
PHYSICAL EXTRUSION - BENEFITS
Efficient
A single pass of this process yields 71% oil extraction, only ~6-8% residual oil content in post expeller soybean meal.
Robust
Low FFA content in our low-fat soybean meal guarantees high storability and ease of transport to off-takers.

Nutritious
Best at eliminating anti-nutritional factors in soy meal, while retaining maximum nutrition. Increased amino-acid digestibility and minimal biterness.
Eco-Conscious
Energy efficient process with no waste streams or added chemicals.

POST-HARVEST MACHINERY
During the harvesting season, there is a shortage of threshing machines. Some of the local machines available to farmers currently are old and outdated. These machines produce high wastage in terms of crushed grains that are threshed out with the husk, leading to significant losses for farmers. In the case of soybeans, most of the threshing machines currently in use do not efficiently separate impurities from the grains. This results in farmers not getting the right price for their produce.
Cropron's Farmer Service Centers engages with the small holder farmers by providing them access to good quality threshing machines through a leasing process wherein the farmers pay for using the machine in kind. It is an established practice in the region where the farmers pay for the machine by giving 10% of the grains produced by the threshing machine.
SEED PROCUREMENT
The Farm Service Centers will serve as buying locations. Farmers and agents nearby will be encouraged to bring their goods for sale at these centers. Apart from that, materials shall also be procured through a network of agents from the interior districts in the Northern region.
INFORMATION & OTHER SERVICES
Employees present at the farmer service centers are educated on the cultivation and post-harvest management of soybeans. Cropron is enthusiastic to provide up-to-date information to farmers to ensure safe and sustainable practices.

In the future, the centers will also provide the farmers with inputs viz. fertilizers, agrochemicals, farm advisory, and credit linkages.
